6 Types Of Masks

December 08,2021

As the COVID-19 virus is continuously evolving, there are so many variants of the disease emerged. Though most of its evolutions are insignificant there are several dangerous variants that are worth scientific research such as Delta, Gamma, Beta, Alpha, and the latest one, Omicron. Therefore mask wearing won’t end in recent years since cases are still surging in some countries while a few cases are still emerging in countries taking strict disease controlling measures. Perhaps it is time to learn more about masks.

The definition and category of masks

Made of non-woven fabric, masks are used to filter air in order to prevent harmful gas, odor, droplets entering the mouth and nose.

Masks generally consist of medical masks, industrial protective masks and civil masks and they differentiate from each other in their application scenarios, main characteristics, standards, production technology.

Medical masks

Medical mask products are generally made of three layers of non-woven fabric, the outer layer of which is waterproof non-woven fabric which can block droplets, body fluids, and other liquids. The middle layer is melt-blown non-woven fabric usually treated by a special technology, performing the most important role in filtering process. The inner layer mainly uses ES non-woven fabric, which performs well in moisture absorption.

Types and characteristics of medical masks

Medical masks include disposable medical mask, surgical mask and medical respirators. We are going to list their application scenarios, main characteristics respectively.

Disposable medical mask

Application setting:

Ordinary medical sites such as hospitals, community health centres, and so on.

key features:

There are no strict requirements for face fitting and blocking liquid and droplets. Ear straps and lace-straps are the commonly used models, which are similar to surgical masks in appearance.

Surgical mask

Application setting:

Surgical procedures for clinical staff.

key features:

Blocking blood, body fluids, and some particles.

Ear strap type and lacing type.

Medical respirators

Application setting:

Suitable for medical work environment.

key features:

Filtering particulate matter in the air, block droplets, etc., to protect the respiratory tract infectious diseases transmitted through the air.

Common models: cup mask and foldable mask

Industrial protective mask

Double filter gas mask supplier Application setting: generally used in special industrial places, such as painting, cement production, sand, iron and steel processing, a large number of dust, iron filings.

key features:

Effectively protect the inhalation dust and other fine particles.

According to the filtration performance, it is divided into KN and KP. KN type is only suitable for filtering non-oily particles. KP type is suitable for filtering oily particles.

Civil masks

Civil masks consist of daily protective masks and cotton masks.

Daily protective masks

Application setting:

Filter particulate matter in daily air pollution environment.

Key features:

Performing well in filtering.

Cotton masks

Application settings:

Anywhere. Mainly used for warmth or decoration.

Key features:

Good air permeability

It can only filter larger particles, and has no effect of anti-dust and anti-bacteria.
