December 11,2021

Although 2021 is about to pass and 2022 is coming, COVID-19 is still mutating and spreading. Masks are still a necessity in our lives. During the two-year experience, it’s believed that most people have mastered the correct way to wear a mask. But we are facing a new problem. Wearing masks for a long time will cause some damage to our facial skin, which is especially serious for medical staff. So how to solve it? Keep reading!

Face Masks

What problems can be caused by wearing a mask for a long time?

✖️Mask oppression

This symptom mainly appears in people who wear masks for a long time, such as medical staff, whose dedication is admirable and distressed. This phenomenon is called "Medical Device Related Pressure Injuries" (MDRPI), which refers to pressure injuries caused by medical devices used for diagnosis and treatment.

Wearing a mask for four hours according to the instructions will generally not cause skin damage, but when we are in public places and offices, the wearing time usually exceeds 4 hours. Due to the thin dermis of the nose, cheekbones, and ears, and the lack of fat layer cushioning, it is easy to cause pressure-related injuries. The early symptoms are local depressions or congestion of the skin; when severe, there will be skin ulceration and infection. It's similar to a pressure sore in bed.

✔️Solutions:

  1. Choosing a head-wearing mask can reduce ear pressure.

Mask "decompression" method - using the packaging box to change the ear type into a head type. Headwear masks do not compress the ears and can be worn for a longer time.

  1. If you need to wear a mask for a long time, you can apply moisturizer locally in advance to reduce friction.

The slight indentation that has been produced generally does not require special treatment. If there is subcutaneous congestion, drugs that improve local blood circulation can be used externally, such as Hiruto cream, heparin cream, etc.; antibiotic ointments can be externally used on the damaged skin, and band-aids or gauze can be used to protect the wound.

✖️Acne-like lesions

The sealing and local pressure caused by wearing a mask for a long time on the skin will cause the occlusion of the hair follicle sebaceous duct; in addition, the water vapor exhaled from the nasal cavity will form a local humid and hot environment in the mask wrapper area. At this time, Propionibacterium acnes and M. Serrata, Mites, etc. tend to be more active, which may cause acne or aggravate.

✔️Solutions:

This symptom can be treated as general acne. Wash your face twice a day with warm water, do not use strong alkaline soaps, and choose facial cleansers and cosmetics (salicylic acid, fruit acid, alcohol, etc.) reasonably. People with mild symptoms can use benzoyl peroxide, retinoic acid, and other drugs externally, and those with severe symptoms can take minocycline or isotretinoin (both prescription drugs) as appropriate.

Under the premise of ensuring the safety of epidemic prevention, it is recommended to take off the mask every 2 to 3 hours to allow the skin to breathe.

✖️Try not to make up

N95 masks with breathing valves generally only have aired out, not in. Powder particles are larger, and if they fall off, the valve cannot be closed, so that viruses can enter. In addition, for ordinary surgical masks, powder particles will block up the tiny pores in the filter layer of the mask, reducing the ventilation efficiency, and water vapor can not be discharged, which will increase the discomfort of wearing. And inhaling powder particles can also lead to allergies and asthma.

✔️Solutions:

Because the breathing valve can give out one-way air, if you are infected, or suspected to be infected, or in isolation, you should not use this type of mask, because the breathing valve may discharge virus-carrying droplets.

At the same time, liquid foundation and cream products contain tiny particles, which can easily block local pores after pressure, cause local infections and increase acne.

Also, note that the cream should not be too greasy as it tends to stick to the mask. And a cream that is too sticky will increase the adhesion of pathogenic particles such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi.

People with oily skin can wipe their faces regularly with wet wipes and then wear a mask.

✖️Acne on the face

Wearing a mask for a long time will affect the secretion of oil and sweat on the skin, and because the mask is pressed tightly on the skin, the sebaceous gland opening is easy to block, and many people have aggravated acne or suffer from seborrheic dermatitis. The inside of the mask that is used for a long time is warm and humid. It is easy to breed germs, and it can also cause skin redness, itching, and acne.

✔️Solutions:

  • Take it off immediately when you don't need to wear a mask to let the skin breathe as much as possible.

  • Keep your mouth shut, eat fewer sweets and greasy food, and don't stay up late.

  • Those with severe acne can use isotretinoin cream, antibiotic ointment, and other topical ointments moderately, but the medication should be regulated under the guidance of a doctor.
